Boring Beck

I''ve been a huge supporter of Beck and his creativeness over the years. This cd however, just doesn''t hold my interest. It''s not that the songs are slow, they just feel emotionless unlike other cd''s like Sea Change and Morning Phase.

I speak as s longtime fan of Beck who’s seen him live on the Sea Change tour and has all his albums when I say this is a great album, I’ve listened to it 3 or 4 times and while it’s not his best, it’s definitely not as bad as some people make it out to be. I’ve seen reviewers say “this is soulless pop” or “generic “ and some people knock it because of Chris Martin from Coldplay and production on 2 songs from Pharrell Williams (who Beck wanted to work with very badly in 1999 by the way). Anyway, I would describe the sound of this album as like a mix of everything from his previous albums; every track has something that’s reminiscent of a prior record but sounds original. Another description that would fit would be a darker version of “Colors” which also had what I thought an eclectic sound. Becks lyrics are more introspective and sometimes he sounds depressed but he also sounds like he’s searching for hope. This time an album for everyone but unlike the modern sounds and albums coming out these days, Beck is an excellent songwriter and there’s not one song I would skip on here; even the short opening track is wonderful. My advice is, each Beck fan has a preference so listen to samples or YouTube etc and determine if you like the sound (for instance? I don’t care much for Modern Guilt, it’s ok). For diehard fans of Beck, I really think you should get this though, it gets better with every listen. Recommended

I quickly skimmed over the other reviews here just to see if my experience was off--and it wasn''t, but not for the reasons other people have given.

I didn''t like Beck back in early 1994 when "Loser" was scaling the charts. He''s about my age, and I judged him hard back then. I thought he was a slacker. But over the ensuing years I softened about him, and now I have most of his albums.

"Hyperspace" supposedly has the most collaborations than any other Beck album. You fooled me. It all sounds like Beck to me. I would not have guessed that Chris Martin was on here from Coldplay, or that Pharrell Williams was on here, too. So.....? Not sure what to make of that. I actually like being able to tell when there''s a collaborator, but I didn''t feel that was the case here.

So, the music. I really liked Beck''s last album, "Colors". It was upbeat, fun, and much needed after the somber "Morning Phase" and the uneventful "Modern Guilt". "Colors" has some strong melodies and modern sounds going for it.

"Hyperspace" is strange. I counted two really good songs out of the 11 tracks--"Saw Lightning" (the only song here with an edge and entirely upbeat tempo) and the excellent ballad "Die Waiting" (which unfortunately reminded me of Post Malone''s "Sunflower" rather than being experienced as an original work by Beck).

The other nine songs......well, I think the opener, "Hyperlife", which is essentially a segue track, could have been left on the cutting room floor. "Uneventful Days", "Chemical" and "See Through" are all pleasant enough, if not retro-sounding 80''s chill tracks. When sequenced together with "Saw Lightning" and "Die Waiting", tracks 2-6 are fairly decent.

That''s when things take a turn. The back half of the album is a slog. "Hyperspace", "Dark Places" and "Star" just didn''t sit well with me. They''re rather boring, slow/mid-tempo tracks that bring the flow of the album to a halt. I did like "Stratosphere" and "Everlasting Nothing". So, out of the 11 tracks there''s seven decent songs with two of those, "Saw Lightning" and "Die Waiting" being top 40 hits (but they won''t be because that''s the state of the world we live in now).

Judging by the album cover, Beck is aiming for that 80''s retro feel here, but not sure why. He''s been around a long while now, why not push the boundaries of music instead? I have a feeling as time passes that "Hyperspace" will be viewed as one of Beck''s lesser works.

Here''s how "Hyperspace" compares to Beck''s other albums:

1993 Golden Feelings: I don''t own it and haven''t heard it.
1994 Stereopathetic Soulmanure: I don''t own it and haven''t heard it.
1994 Mellow Gold: Three and a Half Stars
1994 One Foot In The Grave: I don''t own it and haven''t heard it.
1996 Odelay!: Four Stars
1998 Mutations: Four Stars
1999 Midnite Vultures: Three Stars
2002 Sea Change: Four Stars
2005 Guero: Five Stars
2006 The Information: Four Stars
2008 Modern Guilt: Three and a Half Stars
2014 Morning Phase: Four Stars
2017 Colors: Four and a Half Stars
2019 Hyperspace: Three Stars

My favorite Beck albums are Mutations, Sea Change and Morning Phase. So that tells you the kind of Beck music I like. Hyperspace is not exactly like these other three, but it is close enough to that end of the Beck music spectrum for me.

Firstly, I think it''s perfectly justified, and inevitable, to compare an artist''s early works with their new direction. I think that this album has so little of the cleverness and eccentricities that has kept Beck so memorable and relevant an artist. He''s always been vaguely a pop artist to my ears in overall sound, but with enough personality in other albums to make his work stand out. This, however, is completely forgettable.
I didn''t like Colors--too much bubblegum for my blood--but at the VERY LEAST I can listen to it and say it still sounds a little like Beck. I can even recognize some of those songs, but virtually all of Hyperspace sounds identical, I can barely recall what each track sounds like, even after I just listened to it. I just don''t hear enough Beck in this Beck album.
Gone are the fun samples, clever wit, unique instrumentation, and general whimsy that earned Beck a career to begin with. I''d have given it a second star if the only track I feel like replaying wasn''t just the 90 minute intro (most interesting track in the album).

Beck has been sloping downward since The Information, and Hyperspace accelerates the trend. The music is so inoffensive, so soft, so techno-easy listening--pleasant enough but no edge to it at all. Who could be the target audience for this? Teenage girls perhaps, but we already have Coldplay for that. The only positive is that it''s so very short, without even any remixes added in to pad the length. Two listens and forgotten with Hyperspace.

Update: Being a Beck album, I couldn''t just give up, so I went back to try harder for a week. But, no change of opinion, the verdict stands. Finally put on Guero and sure enough, that''s for me.
